I now work in Alaska…and Seattle…and on airplanes, back and forth.
Not what I would have expected when my family moved back to the Seattle area in mid-May 2015. At that time, I was working full time on this nonprofit ministry, Redemption Group Network. This Fall, not yet having reached financial stability for the ministry, I sought other full time work. To my surprise, I received an invitation to work at ChangePoint Alaska in Anchorage. I’m now working full time on their Redemption Groups while continuing to help other churches through Redemption Group Network. My residence with my family remains in the Seattle area. So you know what that means: frequent flyer miles.
The beauty of creation here is breathtaking. A new friend and colleague here at ChangePoint, Dan Jarrell, wrote:
The majesty of the wilderness is overwhelming. Its beauty is simultaneously seductive and foreboding. The contrasts are spectacular: the silence of a mountain meadow, the thundering crack of a calving glacier, hundreds of thousands of migrating salmon outnumbered only by flocks of mosquitoes (Alaska’s “state bird”). You cannot consume the Alaskan wilderness; it consumes you.
Fortunately, I’ve so far survived the wilderness, including a sightseeing flight with a bush pilot who landed our plane on a frozen lake, “hoping” the ice was sufficiently thick. (That pilot happens to also be one of my supervisors at ChangePoint, so that flight goes down in my books as one of the more exciting staff meetings.) Also, I’ve not yet had any terrible encounters with the state bird.
The team here at ChangePoint had already been working hard on preparing to launch their Redemption Group ministry this past year. In fact, I’d been here in April, August, and October 2015 with a few teams of volunteers from the network to run some training events.
Here’s a photo of the Redemption Group Network team who came for an Immersion in April:
Because my focus at ChangePoint will be on Redemption Groups, it means that I’ll get to continue working on the development of the ministry, doing much of the work I’d already planned to do in 2016. I hadn’t imagined doing it from Alaska, but hey, the Lord works in mysterious ways. ChangePoint’s vision statement is life in Christ for every Alaskan and the world beyond. Redemption Groups have become part of their reach to the world beyond.
One opportunity coming right up, in fact, is a new offering of a class called Biblical Counseling Foundations. I’ll be teaching this for ChangePoint, but also making it available for others to connect remotely. Have a look at the course description and details. We’d love to have you join us!
